Fun Wine Facts To Make You Sound Smart

– If You Take a Wine Bath, You Will Turn Purple!

Ok, so that’s not actually true. Or is it? Hmmm, after I write this I’m going to try it. I’ll keep you updated. There are, however, many fun facts out there about wine for you to blabber about at a tasting or party to make you sound smart. Or, at the very least, make you appear knowledgeable about wine.

Whether or not you consider yourself a wine connoisseur, or just a casual drinker, having fun with others is what it’s all about. Drinking wine is supposed to be enjoyable, so why not throw out some useful (and some not so useful) fun facts? I’m here to help you get prepared for that next event, either one you are hosting or one that you are attending. Let’s play 20 questions.

1. How many glasses are in a bottle of wine?

Well, obviously this depends on the size of the bottle and how much is poured. But, taking a standard 750ml bottle, the average here is 5 glasses. If it’s a wine tasting in the woods, and a funnel is involved, it could be just 1 glass.

2. How many calories are in a bottle of wine?

Once again, size matters here, so let’s keep using the 750ml bottle. Also, the type of wine makes a difference. The range is actually between 450 and 1450 calories, meaning your average bottle will contain 750 calories. So, if you don’t eat, 3 bottles would be your average daily calorie intake. Not recommended.

3. If you take a red wine bath will you turn purple?

Sorry guys, I couldn’t wait until I finished writing. I just went ahead and tried it. The answer is no. Well, not permanently at least. Taking wine baths is actually a thing, and some say it has health benefits. Staining your tub is highly possible, so I’m seeing some extra exercise in the future cleaning it.

4. If I drink a glass of wine a night for my entire adult life, how much would I drink?

Here’s your chance to impress on the fly. Show off those crazy math skills, right? So, if you had one glass per night as an adult, over your life time that would be equivalent to around 4,160 bottles of wine! Of course, that depends on, you know, how long you are an adult. A bottle a week would be 2,970 bottles. Before you throw this fact out there, however, I’d recommend giving a slight pause and looking up. Make it look like you are doing super fast math in your head and not just spouting facts from memory.

5. How heavy is a bottle of wine?

One bottle of 750ml wine weighs around 2.65 lbs. A case of 12 bottles would weigh about 30 to 40 lbs. 10 cases would weigh between 300 to 400 lbs. One case being carried by an elephant would weigh 10,400 lbs. Well, that depends on the size of the elephant. Yeah, I had to look that one up. I’m the wine expert, not the animal whisperer.

6. Is is true that if you put a bottle of wine in your car’s exhaust pipe your car will go faster?

I have no idea and who is writing these questions?/span>

7. How many grapes are on 1 acre of land in a vineyard?

Great question! This one actually makes sense! So, the average vineyard acre contains about 2.5 tons of grapes, or 5,000 lbs. That’s like filling 2 of the elephants from question 5 up with grapes. Impressive, I know.

8. How much fat and cholesterol is in wine?

There is zero! Now I know some of you are going to try to use this to create some new diet. I wouldn’t recommend that, but if you are currently doing a low fat and low cholesterol diet, the wine won’t hurt you there, so drink up.

9. If I squeeze grape juice into a jar will it turn into wine?

Surprisingly, the answer to this question is yes! As long as the juice is kept at a warm temperature, it will eventually turn into wine. Would I drink it? Probably not. Just because it becomes wine doesn’t mean it’s good wine. Still, fun fact to know!

10. Does wine go well with tacos?

Seriously, who is writing these questions? Of course it does! Everything goes well with tacos. Well, I take that back. The wine from question 9 probably would still be terrible. Or maybe not. Everything is good with tacos.

11. How many different varieties of wine are there in the world?

Ahhh, we are taking this to another level I see? There are currently 1,268 confirmed varieties worldwide. Once again, and sorry if I’m being repetitive, but the wine you made from question 9 is not included in this list.

12. How many grapes does it take to make a bottle of wine?

This can vary, depending on the varietal and winemaker, but the range is between 300 and 900 grapes! The average is around 550, or 5.5 bunches of grapes in each bottle! I can already see you trying to calculate your fruit intake part of your diet. No, these grapes don’t count for that. Sorry.

13. How many bottles of wine will one barrel produce?

The average barrel used to in the production process will contain 295 bottles of wine! No, that does not include the bottles. That’s just the wine. I feel silly having to explain that.

14. Is it true you can marry a bottle of wine?

Ummmm…..Depends on where you are. However there are usually laws against drinking your spouse.

15. How many acres of grapes are grown worldwide?

There are approximately 20 million acres of grapes grown in the world today! That makes grapes the number 1 ranked fruit crop! That’s a lot of elephants full of grapes if we are using that weird equation from earlier.

16. When was the first corkscrew invented?

The first ever corkscrew was patented in 1795. I’m not talking about the corkscrew move in pilates (Don’t ask me why I know that is a thing.) No, I’m talking about the actual corkscrew that you use to open your wine. Pilates didn’t exist until 1796, right?

17. What exactly is the vintage of a wine?

Now this one will probably start up some crazy discussion at your wine tasting, so I’m going to arm you with the truth. The vintage of a wine is the year the grapes were actually grown! There, now you know the truth.

18. Can I take a bath in the wine that I made in the jar from those grapes in question 9 since I shouldn’t drink it?

I can’t even. Just stop it.

19. Is swirling your wine in your glass really called “humouring” your wine?

Yes, yes it is. However, I don’t recommend sitting in the corner at the wine tasting telling bad one liners to your glass. You will just look weird or drunk or both. But throwing out this fun fact will probably attract some laughter out of intrigue.

20. What is the most common grape grown in the world today?

The most widely produced grape in the world of winemaking is Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s about all I got on that one.

So, there you have it. 20 fun and useful facts you can use at your next wine tasting or party. Or, if you are at a zoo, feel free to use all the elephant ones I gave you. Either way. Just remember, wine is to be fun and enjoyable, and as always, enjoy every bottle, every sip.

So there you have it. 10 need to know (well, most of them) facts about wine to hit the tasting tonight. Time to start talking about legs, arms, and bodies.
